Local Food Businesses Team Up to Celebrate Pasture-based Farming
Many consumers are still in the dark when it comes to making healthy, humane choices about meat and dairy products. Cherry Grove Farm, Eno Terra Restaurant, and the Whole Earth Center hope to shed a little light on that subject by highlighting the relationship between how farm animals are raised and the quality of their meat, dairy, and eggs. The farm, restaurant, and retailer are teaming up to bring author and farmer Shannon Hayes to the area for 3 events that will explore the ecological, culinary, and animal welfare benefits of pasture-based farming. Hayes will be in town on June 16 and 17 to host a wine dinner at Eno Terra Restaurant, a conversation at the Whole Earth Center about her upcoming book, and a sunset grass-fed grilling workshop at Cherry Grove Farm.
Hayes' Princeton-area events include:

The Grass-fed Gourmet Wine Dinner: a 5-course celebration of the culinary pleasures of pasture-raised foods. The menu will feature grass-fed organic beef, pastured poultry and eggs, and handmade farmstead cheeses, all produced on local family farms. Between courses, Hayes will explain the ecological, culinary, and health benefits of pasture-based farming. The Grass-fed Gourmet Wine Dinner will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2009 at 6PM at Eno Terra Restaurant at 4484 Route 27 in Kingston, NJ. The cost is $80 plus tax and gratuity. To make a reservation, call Eno Terra at 609-497-1777.

Radical Homemaking: Politics, Ecology, and the Domestic Arts: a casual conversation about family life on the farm and the inspiration behind Hayes' upcoming book, Radical Homemakers. Hayes will discuss what she discovered as she traveled across the United States interviewing men and women in rural, urban and suburban communities who've chosen forego conventional careers and cast aside the pressures of a consumer culture in favor of focusing their creative energy on family and community--a quality of life decision that they embrace as both a political and ecological act. The event will be held on Thursday, June 17, 2009 from 9AM to 10AM at the Whole Earth Center at 360 Nassau Street in Princeton. The event is free and activities for children will be available during the talk. Sign up at the store or call 609-924-7429 to pre-register.

Sunset Grass-fed Grilling Workshop: a fast-paced and fact-filled workshop on the proper way to grill a variety of cuts of pasture-raised meat. The workshop will be held outdoors on this 400-acre organic livestock farm. Many different cuts of meat will be grilled and sampled and even the Weber-wary will learn to master the art of grilling. The Sunset Grass-fed Grilling Workshop will be held on Thursday, June 17 from 6PM to 8PM at Cherry Grove Farm at 3200 Lawrenceville Road (Rte. 206) in Lawrenceville. The cost is $35 and pre-registration is encouraged. To register, stop by the farm or mail a check for $35 to Cherry Grove Farm, 3200 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.

Aug 15: Frosty Hollows and Meat Loaf

A reading of essays about growing up and making a life on a farm in the Catskills

Farmer/author Shannon Hayes grew up in Schoharie County,NY, caught in a crossfire between school life in a modern valley, and farm life in the back hills -- which were governed, for better or worse, by the remaining vestiges of an Appalachian culture. Hayes will read a selection of short essays about her family’s journey to carve out a meaningful life on their land, where the old Appalachian culture ultimately offered the secret to survival.
